Waarom CO2 gestuurde mechanische ventilatie?

In een woning wordt dagelijks door de bewoners liters vocht geproduceerd, wanneer dit vocht niet weg kan zorgt het binnenshuis voor een slecht klimaat met een hoog gehalte aan CO2 (koolstofdioxide). Teveel CO2 in de lucht kan klachten zoals hoofdpijn, concentratieverlies en hoofdpijn veroorzaken. Bovendien is het niet bevorderlijk voor de gezondheid; in het bijzonder die van mensen met astma of allergieën. Met CO2 gestuurde ventilatie kan dit worden tegengegaan.

CO2 gestuurd ventileren is de oplossing

Gelukkig is er een oplossing: ventileren. Dat kan op natuurlijke wijze door enkel ramen open te zetten, een andere optie is mechanisch ventileren. Bij mechanische ventilatie wordt een unit op zolder geplaatst die de vervuilde lucht uit verschillende ruimtes afzuigt via het dak naar buiten. Verse lucht komt de woning binnen dankzij roosters of open ramen. Wanneer u kookt of doucht, kunt u de unit handmatig in een hogere stand zetten voor extra benodigde ventilatie. Dit is vraag gestuurd ventileren. Bij CO2 gestuurde ventilatie gaat dit automatisch. Dit ventilatiesysteem bevat één of meerdere sensoren die het CO2 gehalte in de lucht detecteren en vervolgens automatisch de unit in een hogere stand laten ventileren net zo lang tot het gehalte weer op peil is. Zo wordt de vervuilde lucht verdreven en maakt het plaats voor frisse, zuurstofrijke lucht waarin het prettig verblijven is en kost dit niet onnodig veel energie. Het is dus goed voor het milieu én uw portemonnee.

Hoe werkt een CO2 meter?

CO2, ook wel koolstofdioxide, is een kleur- en geurloos gas dat wij mensen uitademen. Er worden door ons maar kleine hoeveelheden uitgeademd, maar over een hele dag gezien kan dit in uw huis, op school of op kantoor gestaag oplopen. De verhouding van de CO2 waarden in de lucht, wordt uitgedrukt in PPM (parts per million). Door het aanschaffen van een mechanische ventilatie met CO2-meter kan de hoeveelheid koolstofdioxide in de lucht gemeten worden, aan de hand van het resultaat kan dan vervolgens actie ondernomen worden.

Waarom CO2 meten?

Het is belangrijk dat ruimten waar meerdere personen voor geruime tijd aanwezig zijn, goed geventileerd worden. Wanneer de CO2-waarde in de ruimte hoog is, betekent dit dat de hersenen minder zuurstof binnen krijgen dan wenselijk is. Een te hoog CO2 gehalte kan leiden tot hoofdpijn, slechte concentratie, verergering van allergieën en een snellere verspreiding van virussen zoals het coronavirus. Kortom, dit creëert een ongezond leefklimaat en dan kan CO2 een oorzaak zijn van gezondheidsproblemen.

Om dit te voorkomen, is de aanschaf van een mechanische ventilator met CO2-sensor een goede oplossing. Hiermee kan de luchtkwaliteit gemeten worden en wordt een ongezond leefklimaat voorkomen. Maar hoe werkt zo’n CO2-meter nou precies? Een CO2-meter geeft een nauwkeurige aanduiding van de hoeveelheid koolstofdioxide in de lucht in parts per million. Deze meter zal alarm slaan wanneer er een gevaarlijk hoge CO2-concentratie in de ruimte aanwezig is.

Overzicht PPM waarden

Hieronder zie je de waarden die het apparaat aan kan geven en wat deze waarden betekenen voor jou en de mensen om je heen.

450 tot 800 PPM De ruimte waarin je je bevindt is goed geventileerd.

800 tot 1200 PPM Een slecht geventileerde en drukke ruimte. Lange blootstelling kan onder andere je concentratieniveau aantasten. Ventileren is gewenst.

1200 tot 2000 PPM Door de grote hoeveelheid CO2, zullen de hersenen minder zuurstof krijgen dan gewenst. Gezondheidsklachten zijn in dit geval niet ondenkbaar. Ventileren is noodzakelijk.

Wanneer de CO2-meter een te hoge PPM waarde in de ruimte waarneemt, zal deze aangeven dat er geventileerd moet worden. Dit kun je dan bijvoorbeeld op een natuurlijke manier doen door een raam of deur open te zetten. Mocht dit niet werken, dan zal er mechanisch geventileerd moeten worden. Via de CO2-sensor kunt u dan aflezen of er meer of minder geventileerd dient te worden.

Hoeveel PPM CO2 is gevaarlijk?

Alle CO2 waarden boven de 1200 PPM moeten vermeden worden omdat deze slecht zijn voor je welzijn en gezondheid. Bij een CO2 niveau van rond de 1200 PPM zul je merken dat de lucht bedompt en onfris is en er klachten optreden zoals:

  • Vermoeidheid, sufheid en concentratieverlies
  • Hoofdpijn
  • Verergering van allergieën
  • Grotere kans op virusverspreiding omdat veel van de lucht in de ruimte al eens is ingeademd.


Onderzoekers van o.a. de State University of New York ondervonden zelfs dat al bij een CO2 niveau van 1000 ppm een significante vermindering in prestaties te zien was bij hun testpersonen. Mede daardoor raden wij aan te allen tijde te zorgen dat het groene lampje van de CO2 meter brandt; het CO2 niveau blijft dan onder de 800 PPM.
